The Video Supreme
MUSIC PLAYER
This demonstration version of the
Music Player is exclusive to STOSSER.
The full-version is available with
Video Supreme version 2.0, which should
be available around June/July 1994.
The Music Player allows you to
load and play all your music files. The
following music types are recognised:
Mad Max TAO (Chip #1/#2)
Count Zero TAO (Digidrum)
Lap #1/#2 Titan
Lap (1 scanline) Nexus
Big Alec #1/#2 LTK
Ninja Turtle Megatizer
Zound Dragger Synth Dream
Ben Daglish Lary
The full-version also allows you
to play unrecognised music types, but
this feature has been taken out for
this version.
Your music files can also be in
compressed format if you wish. The
following packers are recognised:
Atomik v3.5 Automation v5.1
Fire v2.2 Ice v2.3 & v2.4
Speed v2.0 & v3.0
You can load the program directly
from the Desktop. Press a key to get
past the intro screen and you'll be
presented with the main options screen.
You'll notice that the OFFSET
icons are inversed, meaning that they
are disabled. These icons are used to
play back unrecognised music files in
the full-version.
Next are the VU "-" and "+" icons.
These icons are used to choose which
type of vu-metering you want. In this
version there are six to choose from,
but in the full-version there will be
at least twenty to choose from.
You can choose which piece of
music to play, in any given file, by
clicking on the MUSIC NO "-" and "+"
icons.
Click on LOAD MUSIC to go to the
file selector. You can now select the
music file you want to load. When you
return to the options screen you'll be
able to see the following information
about the file: The filename, the music
type, whether the file was compressed
or not, the file size and the real size
of the music file.
Click on PLAY MUSIC to play the
currently loaded music file. You'll
only be able to play recognised music
files in this version. If the MUSIC
TYPE window states "Unknown" then you
will not be able to play this file.
The vu-meter (at the bottom of the
screen) will bounce along in time to
the music being played. Press the
space bar to stop the music playing.
Underneath the PLAY MUSIC icon
you'll see the TIME window. While the
music is playing, this window will show
how many seconds have elapsed.
When you stop the music the time
will be frozen. Holding down either
SHIFT key will convert the seconds into
minutes and seconds, releasing the
SHIFT key will display the seconds
again. The time will be reset to zero
whenever you click on PLAY MUSIC or you
load another music file.
When you've had enough, and you
want to exit the program, click on the
QUIT icon. You will need to hold down
the mouse key for a full one second
on this icon before the program will
quit. I put the one second delay in
because I kept exiting the program by
mistake, not to mention there was less
programming needed than a conformation
routine.
NOTES
Some music files (Megatizer for
one) switch the drive light on when
they start playing. The drive light
usually stays on, even after the music
has stopped playing. Don't worry, this
is quite normal.
Be careful when choosing a piece
of music to play (with the MUSIC NO
icons), as if that particular piece of
music doesn't exist you can lock or
even reset the computer.
Count Zero music is different
though. Try playing music number 1,
and then stop the music with the space
bar. Then select to play a piece of
music that does NOT exist. When you
click on PLAY MUSIC now, the music will
continue from where it left off. Zound
Dragger files also perform like this
as well.
The Music Player was written in
STOS with the Misty and Missing Link
extensions.
The file selector, believe it or
not, is actually the bog-standard STOS
file selector.
The full-version of the Music
Player will probably be improved upon
by the time Video Supreme version 2.0
is finished. It will more than likely
be able to recognise more music types,
as well as more vu-meters and anything
else I can think of.
Anyway, happy music playing, and
may the seeds of your STOS disk be
fruitful in the belly of your computer.
HASTA LA VISTA
